Nhamo Shire: Talent Determination and Sanctuary

Nhamo Shire is known as London’s ‘Mr basketball’ and this year he set up the London City Royals basketball team. Shire had a tough start in life, living alone in a bedsit in London at the age of 14 which could have seen him easily fall into a life of drugs and crime, but when he discovered basketball he put all his focus into the sport. A few years later he broke his ankle and was told he’d be lucky to run for a bus again. The basketball had given his life so much purpose, so this left him at a loss as to what to do. His steely determination saw him fight his way back onto the court, but that wasn’t the last of the big knock-backs in his life – he reconnected with the father he never knew in Zimbabwe, but he passed away soon after; basketball continued to give him the focus he needed to stop his life from crumbling. Nhamo talks to Sandro about how the basketball court was his sanctuary at these difficult points in his life and about how he set up a ‘Midnight Madness’, a late-night social group to help vulnerable youngsters from similar backgrounds as his, which brings them together to play basketball and help give their lives focus.
