Tony Bellingham: Training yourself to work again and never giving up
Tony Bellingham’s story is one that will make your jaw drop! The gifted craftsman is one of few the master goldsmiths in the UK, his work including sculpting gold and silver, carving precious stones and diamond mounting. His works of art have been much sought after by Royalty and Heads of State. For a man of such skill, his hands are invaluable tools, but during a slow period of recovery from contracting TB, he was rushed to hospital with suspected cardiac arrest in 2014. What was to happen next was devastating. He was misdiagnosed with cardiac arrest, unnecessarily operated on and the operation itself left him unable to use his right arm and hand as well as with damaged nerves, leaving him facing a lifetime of extreme pain. Faced with the prospect of endless pain and no longer able to fulfil his passion for creating works of art, he could have easily been condemned to a life of misery and self-pity, but he has instead shown incredibly strength and determination and has slowly but surely taught himself to use his arm and hand and work once again. Tony talks to Sandro about how at one point he felt his life was catastrophically over, how he spent a couple of years both physically and mentally disabled and how he found to strength and inspiration to not give up!
