The Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media Messaging

When it comes to building a successful business today, social media is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. But as with any tool, it only works if you use it properly. Over the years, I’ve seen one common mistake again and again: the way people reach out when making that very first connection.

Let’s talk about the do’s and don’ts of social media messaging—because the first impression you make online could be the difference between a new business opportunity and a door that closes before it ever opens.

The Classic Mistake Everyone Makes

I’m sure you’ve received this message many times (I know I have):
"I’d like you to be part of my network."

It’s the standard default wording LinkedIn gives you. It’s easy. It’s quick. And unfortunately, it doesn’t work.

Here’s why. When I receive a message like that, my immediate thought is: “Well, that benefits you. But what’s in it for me?” And that’s precisely what your prospect is thinking too.

Remember, there are only three things people really care about:

  1. Themselves

  2. Their problems

  3. Their goals, dreams, or desires

If your message doesn’t address any of these, you’ve already lost them.

Flip the Script: Make It About Them

The truth is, people don’t care how many contacts you add to your network. They care about value. So instead of sending the generic LinkedIn invite, try flipping it 180 degrees.

Show the person what they might gain from connecting with you. For example:

  • “I work with people like you to help grow their business and would love to share ideas.”

  • “I’d be happy to introduce you to professionals in my network who may be useful to you.”

When you communicate from a place of giving—not taking—you’ll be amazed at how much more engagement you get.

The Real Key to Social Media Messaging

The bottom line is this: don’t make it about you, make it about them. That small adjustment in wording can significantly increase not only your acceptance rate but also the number of genuine conversations that turn into opportunities.

It’s not about the number of connections—it’s about the quality of the relationships you build.

Social media is crowded, and people are busy. If you want to stand out, focus on delivering value right from the very first message. Build your communication around what matters to the other person, and you’ll start to see more opportunities, stronger relationships, and better results.

Remember: success on social media isn’t about being seen, it’s about being remembered—for the right reasons.
