What is success? And more importantly, can it be learned?

I believe it absolutely can. In fact, not only can success be learned, but it can also be learned subconsciously.

Think back to the moment you learned to ride a bicycle, drive a car, or swim. None of those skills came naturally the first time. You repeated each movement until your brain — and your body — adapted. What began as a conscious effort eventually became automatic. You no longer think about balancing on the bike or turning the wheel; you do it.

That same principle applies to success. Through repetition, reinforcement, and the right mindset, we can train ourselves to succeed almost automatically — without overthinking every step. 

Why Most People Fall Short

I’ve said it many times before:

“People fail not because they aim too high and miss, but because they aim too low and hit.”

It’s true. Too many of us play it safe, setting goals that are comfortable and “realistic.”

Now, I’m not a massive advocate of the SMART goal system — not because it doesn’t work, but because I believe we sometimes need to be a little unrealistic. Growth doesn’t happen in a comfort zone. It happens when we stretch beyond what feels possible.

The Problem with Resolutions

Every year, millions of people write down New Year’s resolutions. And by December, those same resolutions quietly reappear on the next year’s list.

The little voice on your shoulder says, “Don’t worry — there’s always next year.”

But why does this happen? Because most of those goals are driven by conscious effort alone. They’re written down, reviewed once or twice, and then forgotten. Without programming them into the subconscious mind, interference sets in — fear, doubt, discouragement, and distractions from others.

A Simple Exercise to Begin Reprogramming

Here’s something powerful I’d like you to try.

Get 20 or 30 small cards or pieces of paper. On each one, write down a goal — big or small. Think beyond your business. Include goals for your physical health, mental growth, family time, relationships, and those little frustrations you’ve promised to fix “one day.”

At this stage, don’t overthink it. Just write them all down. You don’t even need to commit them to the cards yet — jot them on a list for now.

Why? Because in Part 2 of this series, I’ll show you how to turn these written goals into subconscious habits — the kind that drive progress automatically, just like riding that bicycle.
